In the lead up to the ISTEK Schools 3rd International ELT Conference, we’ll be introducing some of the presenters on the blog. Next up is Jamie Keddie…
Could you tell us a bit about yourself?
I am a Scottish teacher, teacher trainer, writer and presenter. I studied Biochemistry at the University of Aberdeen but found my true passion in life as an English teacher in Barcelona. I am the founder of lessonstream.org, a site dedicated to the use of video clips and other visual materials in the language classroom. My publications include Images in the Resource Books for Teachers series published by Oxford University Press and Videotelling, a DVD teacher training resource by the British Council. I am an associate trainer at Norwich Institute for Language Education in the UK.
I have been teaching English since 2002. I have taught a wide range of learners in a wide range of contexts (teens, adults, one-to-ones, specialist classes for doctors, lawyers, hotel managers, etc.)
Tell us a bit about your session.
Teacher talk is far too important to forget about. We can never stop thinking about our own classroom communicative skills. In my session, I want to look at teacher-led storytelling and consider how it can be used to engage learners and get them thinking, talking and learning English.
Why are you interested in the area you’ll be presenting on?
Technology comes and goes but communication in the classroom is always number one.
What should your audience expect to learn?
We spend so much time trying to get students to talk that sometimes we forget that our own voices are the most important resources we have. I want those who attend the talk to take away a variety of practical techniques that will allow them to engage learners, especially teenagers, with teacher-led storytelling.
What are three words that sum up your session?
Teacher-led storytelling (for) teenagers
Which other presenter(s) are you looking forward to seeing?
There are so many great sessions to attend. It’s going to be difficult to choose. I am really looking forward to Sugata Mitra’s talk. And it will be great to see Jan Blake doing her thing again!
Do you blog? Tell us about it?
I have a resource site for teachers called lessonstream.org. It is full of lesson plans that teachers can download and use in the classroom.
Can we find you on Twitter or Facebook?
The best place to find me is at the Lessonstream Facebook page. The link is on my site.
Have you been to Turkey before or is this your first time?
I absolutely love Turkey. This is my fourth visit.
What other aspects of the conference are you looking forward to?
Meeting friends. Turkish food. And boats! Please let me get on a boat. I will be a happy man!
